Secure the Scene

First responders are usually regular patrol officers, not specially trained investigators. However, these law enforcement officers (LEOs) play a critical role in ensuring that evidence is collected in a way that preserves its value and admissibility in court.

After rendering assistance to any possible injured parties and detaining suspects/witnesses, LEOs should quickly secure the crime scene and begin a personnel log, listing the names of all persons entering and exiting the scene, along with the times they enter and leave. As additional personnel arrive, LEOs should be stationed to prevent unnecessary persons from entering the scene.

In the normal course of their lifesaving duties, even if exercising care, firefighters and paramedics will alter a crime scene. However, LEOs should avoid touching, moving, or covering anything, including any deceased.
